Great Day..

Postby weekdaywarriors on Mon Dec 17, 2007 9:31 am

Hey Everyone,

We had a great day at Brothers yesterday with the inaugural Social Day of Brisbane's newest Country Rock Music venue. A few of the Usual Suspects were there as well as some new faces. Road-Works played a couple of short sets as did Mal Davies and Kevin Date, Peter Holland and Paul Stubbs, and Warren Freeman. Newcomers Paul Platt and Clive Brakell.

Chrys Gunesekara filled in for us with our mate, Ben Ide, stuck in China and Ezio Marsic and Paul McBride came along to make sure we had enough driummers. There were more there listening and getting set for a debut in February 2008 when we kick off. Check the page on the Road-Works website going up soon for the Country Rock Social day in Feb. Thanks to Ellaways and Brothers for their sponsorship.

Cheers,
Bob

Would like to know more info

Postby Angelsroc on Sun Aug 24, 2008 7:46 am

Hi,

I am very interested in getting back into singing after having family and putting that part of my life on hold. I was bought up on country and even sung down at Tamworth. But I was very young. I love the country rock so am very interested in seeing if I could get back into singing with the help of weekend warriors as I was not lucky enough to have played a musical instrument. Although I am in the middle of trying to teach myself the guitar. If you can assist me or at least I would luv to come along to one of your social days.

Thanks for your time

Hi Gail,

Great to hear you're getting back into it. Unfortunately, the venture at Albion didn't work out. Instead there's a new Country Rock night now being held on the second Thursday of each month at Ellaways auditorium at Underwood. There've been some really good guest artists on show. There's also a walk-up section for anyone who wants to get up and do a couple of tunes. You'd need to be able to accompany yourself though unless you can sweet-talk someone on the night into backing you.

There are a couple of other options too. First is the monthly jam - again at Ellaways Underwood and held on the first Thursday of each month. You just put your name up on a whiteboard as a singer and we form a band around you to play along. There are heaps of charts provided for you to select songs from. They're mostly all well-known tunes but if you'd prefer your own songs, you need to bring 4 copies of the charts with you for the jammers to play along to.

Another option is to go through a Weekend Warriors round. Round 29 is about to get under way now so you've just missed the cut on that one unfortuately. Again, it starts with a jam and we form a band around you from people with similar musical tastes. This is followed by 4 weeks of practice and coaching and then the grand finale - a concert where you and your band (plus the other bands in the Round) each perform a 30 minute Set (to rapturous applause from the assembled audience!). It's not a contest - just music for fun. The Round 29 concert will be on Sept 27 so, if you'd like, come along to that and see what it's all about. But, in the meantime, try and make it to a monthly jam. The September one will be on Thursday 4/9 and it starts at 6:30. They're always pretty casual nights - you don't have to get up if you don't want to, but you'll be more than welcome if you do.

Good luck with it all and keep on strumming.
