Each month, Ellaways holds a jam for anyone interested in making live music. They are held on the first Wednesday on alternate months. Here is a chance to get ourselves organized for upcoming jams with songs and players.. Alan Tompkins- what a great idea :)

Hi,

WW sounds perfect for my situation except for bringing my own audience to the actual gig.

I've been playing over a long time, but have spent most of that time just noodling. Just starting to get right back into it. For these jam nights, what kind of skill level is expected? We used to have a garage band in High School and did a few performances, nothing spectacular. Really miss playing with a bassist, drummer, vocalist. How good do you have to be to get involved?

Say I might be able to play ACDC songs, but not the solos. I could learn them if I had a group to play with. Is it suggested you get a repotoire of songs you can absolutley nail before participating? Or do you just sign up for the WW course?

Why I ask is that last time I performed it was in church and I got told off for not playing all the extended/ polychords to Amazing Grace. The singer, a NIDA student, said, "I need those extra notes to harmonise with." So I'm a bit afraid of hooking up and not playing the exact chords and inversions used in the original songs for instance, especially if I've worked them out by ear.

I'd eventually like to meet some people (drummer/ bassist/ singer) who enjoy playing for fun, and then if we sound good enough to eventually do an occasional gig. But mainly who have day jobs and just want to play for the buzz of playing together in a group.

Any advice?

Hello Noodler,

There are two main ways you can get to play: Join the Weekend Warriors for a full round including four rehearsals with a coach and the concert, or turn up at one of the Jam nights run by Ellaways etc. You sound like you are unsure of your ability: don't be, all this is about fun. If you only know three chords then we'll do three chord songs. There are even one chord songs! We never look for excellence; instead we get the best out of what we have (that's what the coaches are for) while keeping it fun for all.

The jam nights are different again in that there is no coaching and the bands are formed on the night for just two songs, then they split up (just like real show business) and other bands are formed to play other songs. It is a very easy-going night and you don't have to play at all if you don't want to. All gear is supplied for all these events so no worries there either.

The next Warriors Jam (which is the start of it all) is on October 20th and the next Jam night is Wednesday 7th November at 1900 at Brothers Rugby Club in Albion.

If you want to chat with someone about this I'm available (I'm a coach so I should be able to answer your questions) via email (alant617@gmail.com) or contact Bob at Ellaways who runs all this stuff and is available 25 hours a day (He'll kill me if he hears that!).

It's brilliant! give it a go.

Cheers,

Hey Noodler,

Alan speaks the truth! Do a warriors round - you'll have a blast!! I've been in the WMA since Round 1 and I'm now in a band getting regular gigs (paid too!). You don't have to be a virtuoso (I'm not!), and like Alan said, it's about having fun. You'd get placed with a bunch of dudes where all you have to do (in your case)is learn the chords to half a dozen songs or so. Hey, do the gig, it's cool!

Good Luck,
Tone

Hello Noodler,

Were you at the jam last Thursday? I'd like to catch up with you at some stage.

Are you going to the Albion jam on Thursday 20th? If so look me up.

Cheers,
