Each month, Ellaways holds a jam for anyone interested in making live music. They are held on the first Wednesday on alternate months. Here is a chance to get ourselves organized for upcoming jams with songs and players.. Alan Tompkins- what a great idea :)

Jam nights( not Happy

Postby jehalame on Sun Aug 26, 2007 4:36 pm

I'm sorry to say but I am not to please with the jams.

I went to the April Jam keen to play my song that I wrote & recorded

I turned up at 6:30 to put my name up along with the name of the singer of the song. After the Acoustic set and Dave came I thought we were going on sooner then latter.

But to my shock our names was rub out, I didn't make a fuss because I did not want to go against the fun of the night but I was still mad(they don't do that to anyone else) I did go up for to songs which was fun but my main reason for going was to play my song.

Dave put his name up and got the rest of the band. So around 9:30 we got on the broad at # 1, After the rest of the broad got up I was ready
but bands 2, 3, ,4 went up before us and it happen again.

I then I got mad so I went up to Bob and told him what I thought and he let me go on. although it was a success and I got my " I didn't think he could play" thing that always happen I was still pissed off with getting rub out.

Fast forward to the August jam the same deal happen, I was snub again
put my name up first and all the names below me got on before me so much so that I didn't go up.

As long that been going to these jams I have been turn down and even turned off. And I had the look up in the air and got the "umm. it been a long time since I played that" and "I don't know that" excuse( An guitar player who is a fan of AC/DC & playing for 20 years and doesn't know Highway to hell? YEAH RIGHT ) They expect me to learn on the spot for, Why don't they do it for me?

I bring the music, the words, like I been told to do. Over the time I' 've been to jams I've seen 40 or 50 something people put up a song from the 60s & it goes up with out fuss. Which is cool but a young buck goes up to put a Morden rock song up then they get a"umm wait or something else.

I saw the young ones that night and they was bored out of their heads
and they leave.

So if you want a certain genre not to be played then say so in your em-mails
As for me if I can't play a song then I would not put it up on the board.

Hi Jeff,

We try hard to accommodate you whenever we can. I can remember purtting you up as a soloist in the middle of a jam. You often picked songs that others didn't know or didn't want to play. Bands that are formed and are ready to play will go ahead of bands that haven't got a full complement of members on the board yet. I have tried very hard to help you at every jam. You need to organise yourself before the night and let me know by email before the night what you have organized.

We try to get as many people on the stage playing music as we can.. we only ever try our best to please you Jeff, sometimes human error means that someone does get rubbed off the board but it is usually because we can't get them players or singers.

Get organised and email me before the night,
Cheers,
Bob

I think I should add my 10c worth from south of the border...

I have personally run 6 Warriors "jam" nights so far and I also attend a weekly public jam session at a pub in Sydney's west.

From my point of view I think that jehalame's ambitions are admirable, but misguided as jam nights are not really about playing songs that no-one knows. How can someone jam comfortably with someone else (and have fun doing so) when they have no idea how the song goes?

Also, at jam nights; solo, duo and even trios are not a practical situation of the usually limited time available on the night and the desrie to get as many as possile on stage.

So, the unwritten law at jam nights would be to be prepared to play songs that people know (and certainly NOT personal compositions) and try to form your self into a group of at least four players. If you have been at the jam several times, you should be able to recognise other players who are on teh same wavelength as you and get together and decide what you're going to play, before you get up on stage. By doing so, the jam organiser will find it really easy to get you up - while other less organised souls are still not ready.

I just want to know that I don't have or never had anything personal against anyone and that never been the case even against the jammers
who spin bullshit at me. (When that happen I just say "Aw well there's other people who will play with me)"... it just how I felt

It was never my assumption that you had anything personal against anyone and similarly, neither do I, for what it's worth.

I was just trying to explain that from my point of view, and using my experience as both and organiser and a very regular jam participant, that your expectations are probably not in tune with the particular jam you are attending.

I don't know what it is like in Brissy, but there are a few public "composer" nights in Sydney and if you want to play a song you have composed and recorded, then you should try to find one of those to find your Nirvana (no, not the band). 8)

And yes, I would be very surprised if you couldn't find someone to play Highway To Hell with at a regular jam, so long of course, that someone has the ability to sing it!
