October Jam

Each month, Ellaways holds a jam for anyone interested in making live music. They are held on the first Wednesday on alternate months. Here is a chance to get ourselves organized for upcoming jams with songs and players.. Alan Tompkins- what a great idea :)

October Jam

Postby Alan T on Fri Oct 02, 2009 10:41 am

I had a great time last night. There seems to be a vibe at the jams that was not there when they first started at Underwood, and this is good. I'm not going to review everyone (I have a memory like a...er...) but I wanted to mention a few highlights in no particular order:

That guy with a lap guitar, and he and Chris sounded good as a duo! Songs we don't often hear - Police etc! 2XS doing Pink Floyd at the end (but I still wanted an INXS number)!

There was more: I got up with a few guys and we invented completely new versions of 'Folsom Prison Blues' and 'Route 66' (titles for those that were there and wondered what the hell we were playing). We were even graced by the dulcet tones of Uncle Bob for a couple of songs, and that is good because he does a lot of work keeping all this live stuff happening and deserves the odd go on stage.

There were old friends to catch up with, new ones to meet (like Bill the drummer - he's good) and drinkies to enjoy while you rested between fist fights at the whiteboard (not really but it did get crowded at times).

So, all in all a good night. If you missed it you can see it in replay at www.suckedin.com.au/idiot!

Cheers,

Hi Al & All.. After being away from the Ellaways Underwood Jam nites, Themes & Warriors, due to other interests recently (I got sidetracked), I was thoroughly entertained & really enjoyed the nights entertainment, catching up with ol' mates and boppin' & rockin' to some cool standards, (as well as some new ones).. gotta love those young guys too!!
It was a good night and a big thanks to Bob for keeping it all going well & Geoff and other coaches for being there,
everyone who got up, and those who had a beer or two.............. Like me... Cheers Marty..

Well thanks Guys,

Now there is even more.. yes Thursday was great and there is a real vibe happening as the auditorium begins to feel like home after such a long time. However there is a new home away from home forming at the Coorparoo RSL. Friday night, my band Road-Works kicked off a new era for the Warriors. Often I've felt the pain of Warrior Bands getting all excited and then not knowing how to get those first gigs out in the big world. Well there is a way now!

Sunday Arvos starting on the 11th October at the Coorparoo RSL, will see WW bands begin as emerging bands, progress to anchor bands and then be selecte for paid 4 hour gigs on Friday and Saturday nights. Anchor bands provide the PA and a backline for emerging bands. Anchor bands get paid $250.00 and open and close the show while emerging bands get experience with just one set each. The Friday and Saturday night gigs have started at $500.00 a band and when we have built a level of support with punters then the money will rise towards $1000.00 a gig.

I don't know about other Warriors but my wife and I often look to go out and see a band on the weekend and plan to enjoy having a meal and a drink at the Coorparoo RSL when our WW bands are on. We (Road-Works) played there Friday night and then returned Saturday night to see "Delta Express". They were very good and we went home on a high. Friday night there were a lot of Warriors who turned up to support and just a few last night. The ball is in our court now, its up to all of us. Here is a centrally located venue offering to support the WW Bands, I am counting on WW's to support their own. WW bands that play there are also expected to turn up and support others when they can.

There is a new era coming to being and I'm hoping there will not be too many growing pains :)

Regards,
Uncle Bob
Best wishes,
Bobbi Mac
